"How much will my deck cost?" — it's the first question every homeowner asks, and the honest answer is: it depends. But we can give you real numbers based on hundreds of decks we've built across Wake County.
Quick Cost Summary
- Pressure-Treated Wood Deck: $25–$35 per sq ft installed
- Composite Deck (Trex, TimberTech): $40–$65 per sq ft installed
- Hardwood Deck (Ipe, Mahogany): $55–$85 per sq ft installed
- Average 300 sq ft deck: $9,000–$20,000
- Average 500 sq ft deck: $15,000–$35,000
What Affects Deck Cost?
1. Materials
Materials are the single biggest cost factor. Pressure-treated Southern Yellow Pine is the most affordable at roughly $8–$12/sq ft for materials alone. Composite decking boards (Trex Enhance, TimberTech Pro) run $12–$22/sq ft for materials. Premium composite lines (Trex Transcend, TimberTech AZEK) can reach $25–$35/sq ft for materials.
2. Size & Layout
Bigger decks cost more in total but less per square foot — there are economies of scale in labor and footings. A simple rectangular deck is the most cost-effective shape. Multi-level designs, angles, curves, and wraparound layouts add 15–30% to the base price.
3. Height & Access
Ground-level decks are the least expensive to build. Elevated decks (4+ feet off the ground) require more structural lumber, taller posts, and often stairs with railings — adding $2,000–$8,000+ depending on height.
4. Railings
Railings are required on any deck 30+ inches off the ground (NC building code). Basic wood railings cost $20–$35 per linear foot. Composite railings run $40–$70/LF. Cable or glass railings can reach $80–$150/LF.
5. Features & Add-Ons
- Built-in benches: $500–$2,000
- Pergola: $3,000–$8,000
- Built-in lighting: $500–$3,000
- Staircase: $1,000–$4,000
- Skirting/lattice: $500–$2,000
6. Permits & Labor
Building permits in Wake County typically cost $200–$500. Labor accounts for roughly 50–60% of your total deck cost in the Raleigh market. Experienced, licensed contractors charge more than handymen — but the quality, warranty, and code compliance are worth it.

How to Save on Your Deck
- Build in fall or winter — contractors are less busy and may offer better pricing (see our timing guide)
- Keep the layout simple — rectangles and squares cost less than angles and curves
- Mix materials — composite decking boards with pressure-treated framing saves thousands vs. all-composite
- Phase the project — build the deck now, add the pergola or lighting later
